No, I don’t know what I was doing making a fist…I think it was an enthusiastic thing??
Jim Kane that coordinates my photography for the Brighton Schools Festival of Ideas took me up on an offer for a photo student to ’shadow’ me on the shoot.
And what a terrific student she was… Roxanne is very enthusiastic about shooting and asked great questions. Best of all, she got great shots

Students who might get a chance to Shadow, learn from Roxanne:
Just a random shot from the event I liked…Love that wide angle!

It’s an interesting challenge to get decent photos of a presenter who’s using a screen like this.
If you use your flash and the speaker is at all close to the screen, it ends up looking mostly white. A huge white screen often makes the speaker look flat and uninteresting, or too dark with auto-exposure.

I do like to play around with screen photos like this, where the subject is actually being hit by the light and it can #1 give you a decent exposure on both the screen and the subject and #2 it can look cool
Photoshop Tip:
You can very quickly improve the looks of a screen.
• Make a selection around a screen by using the ‘Polygon Lasso’ tool (an optional tool under the normal lasso). Just click for the points to make the lines of the screen edge.
• Adjust levels in your favorite way
• Then from the Image Menu, choose Adjust, Hue/Saturation. Tweak the image to correct off colors and make it look more natural.
• Anything you made look weird (like a hand inside the screen area), you can easily undo by using the ‘History Brush’ with the history set before you made the screen selection.
(and PS—These photos aren’t really prepped… they’re just for example!)

I just had a great experience where I was able to turn 30 minutes of downtime at a shoot into some special.
The kids had been learning about digital photography (kudos to the Hillel School and the Rochester City Schools for this after school program) and so, since the kids asked politely and seemed really interested, I let them play a bit with the D200.
These kids were great and they really connected with the idea of how a series of stills played back rapidly becomes animation (I reffed the ‘Wallace & Grommet’ movie and they shot bursts of images that we played back on the LCD.)

We rapidly moved on to ‘Bunny Ears’ and ‘Goofy Faces’ as the art du jour.
Sometimes I stress when shoots are running behind. I’m glad this time I just let these kids be kids, and maybe they saw a bit of how fun shooting can be.

I’ve been shooting so much for the Rochester City Schools Calendar, that there are lots of ‘down moments’ where things aren’t happening at all and I’ve been just enjoying grabbing some PJ style shots… capturing some odd moments like these.

It’s just like ‘people watching’; If you stop at pretty much any second in public, you’ll see a world or weird moments happening around you. Put those moments into a photo frame, and we call it art…
