Les is More

I love seeing my old professor Les Stroebel (left in the photo) at the RIT Reunion each year.

Les was one of my profs for ‘Materials & Processes of Photography’ (known as M&P, it was every science rolled into one class… we learned photography down to the atomic level!)
So Les and John Compton did a great job making a tough class interesting and useful and when we had our final class, we created a ‘Les is More’ banner that hung in the class and we all wore similar buttons.

One lesson I have today from that class is that the real, solid basics will never go out of fashion. The same histograms we learned (and honestly thought we’d never use, are part of my everyday life in Photoshop and in-camera, judging exposure… the histogram is the hills and valleys plot of how bright/dark a photo is).

This year Les beat me to the punch, he said:
‘Hi Ken, You looked surprised when I beat you to the punch and took this picture.’

and sent me this photo:

and here’s my photo of him at the same time… OK, Les won…

I’ll get him next year  :-)

Now that’s how to do a ‘Famous Person’ meet and greet

The UofR Medical Center held the annual Golf Glassic with Pro Jeff Sluman there to visit and work with the golfers.

Now, often these ‘Famous People’ Meet & Greets I’m hired to shoot, usually go like this:
Cattle-line of folks waiting to meet ‘Mr. Famous’, They shake hands and I take a photo, the donor gets to say ‘I really like your work’ and then on to the next person.

Now hey, I don’t want to bust on anybody… just rave about how it went at the URMC.

For anyone that showed up early, Jeff did a clinic, told stories along with Oak Hill pro Craig Harmon.

Then Jeff was at one (very challenging) hole and he’d chat with folks while waiting for the foursome ahead to get off the green, we’d snap a quick shot of the foursome with Jeff and he’d hit a ball with the group… pretty cool seeing a pro at work up that close, and…if you could hit it closer to the pin, you got a gift certificate from the pro shop.

Another cool touch, my UofR contact Tom and Jeff worked out that Jeff signed the balls, and no matter if you won against Jeff…the golfer who was closest to the pin on that hole got to keep Jeff’s signed ball.

So, kudos to URMC’s development folks and Jeff, who’s got the personality (and funny stories) to make it all happen!

Like Father Like Son…Ansel Adams

Ansel Adam’s son Michael visited the Eastman House and it was a real treat. He told the stories of being on photo trips with Ansel and how images like Moonrise (above).
Now the ‘like father, like son’ comment is funny, as Michael is a doctor who rarely takes photographs. BUT he really had Ansel’s, kind spirit and humor.

The top question Michael gets asked? “What would Ansel think about digital photography ?” Michael suggests that Ansel would have loved digital photography and near to his death, Ansel was being give Apple computers by Steve Jobs, which he loved.

It makes sense that AA would have embraced digital since many of his final prints are worlds away from the look of the raw negative. Ansel said that ‘the negative is the score and the print is the performance’. That’s well shown by many of AA’s printing notes on display with the show… Do you wonder how he printed the Moonrise photo? The show even has his hand-written notes on what areas to dodge and burn as well as examples of how the straight print would have looked.

Congratulations to GEH for mounting this great exhibition (all of which comes from GEH’s own archive!) and thanks to Dr. Adams and his wife for the wonderful stories and visit. Show runs through September 3rd 2007… so go soon. Info HERE

Urinetown (the musical) @ Geva is Awesome!

What a riot of a show. This will be a huge hit for Geva. Don’t let the name put you off… I mean, what was ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ anyway?! It’s just a goofy musical, dark comedy, set in a rough future with a water problem… which makes it a ‘Priviledge to Pee’. Once you get past the title, and general idea, there’s very little to object to in the show… we’re taking the kids.
If you want an idea of what Urintown (not the place of course, the musical) is like, check out their Tony Award performance video HERE

See a cool Flash Gallery of my photos from the show HERE in my ‘Secret Hideout’.

Wilmot Cancer Center Discovery Ball

I’ve posted some of my favorite highlight images from the Ball HERE
It’s a cool Flash sliding viewer of large images… enjoy!

PS: What a great night. They had over 1300 people there to support Cancer research. The honorees were the URMC docs that lead the team to discover the Cervical Cancer vaccine. That’s them with their awards above. How cool is that… the first solid end to a type of cancer coming right from our URMC folks in Rochester!

Thanks to everyone at the URMC & Wilmot Center for having me be part of this wonderful event!

RIT Alumni are amazing. From tech photo guru Andrew Davidhazy to Pixar animator (he did Jessi in Toy Story 2 and Mater in Cars!) Michael Krummhoefener and the entire group shared wonderful stories of their success and years at RIT. I wish I had time to properly rave about each one, but at least you can enjoy my Photos HERE
