Hello fellow geeks… I’ve put up a new gallery of FIRST photos including the top teams. HERE

It’s in a new Flash Gallery format, so let me know how you like it in the comments link below.

The Finney team has confirmed their underwriting of a complete area of these shows/galleries and downloads, so hold tight… more to come!

Interview Questions for Photo Students

Posted on by HuthPhoto.
Categories: Teaching.

I’ve been asked to have students ’shadow’ me and once I did a ‘mock interview’ with young photo students.

Here are a few questions I worked up as possibles for the interview. If you are a young photo student, maybe thinking about these things will give you a peek inside what a pro (read: decrepit old shooter ;-) thinks is relevant. Or what a photo editor might ask you in an interview.

Post your comments and thoughts about the questions (or some of your answers) below.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Years of shooting

Magazines/web sites they like

Published?

Example of how you’ve worked on a team… how did it go?

Brought camera? Tell me about the camera features you like

Computer/Photoshop experience

How do you track and backup your photos?

Digital vs. Film thoughts (this was a few years ago)

Most enjoyable shoot/assignment you’ve ever done

Biggest mistake you’ve made shooting and how you worked it out

Future plans

Tell me about yourself: hobbies, personality, passions, work history

Brought photos to show me?

What’s the current/last book you read (photo or otherwise)

What does the phrase ‘The Decisive Moment’ mean

What world leader is…. (me pick a current topic)

How would you: Get a subject sharp and the background ‘soft’

Get a sharp photos at a daytime Baseball game

Get good photos of your school’s musical

Let’s say I’m giving you this assignment…tell me everyting you would do from this second on through my getting finished images (shoot: Visiting author at a elementary class, or President at the Convention Center)

Cut it Out with the Megapixel Questions!

If someone asks me one more time on a shoot ‘Hey, how many mexapixels does that camera have??’ I’m going to scream.

Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!

Hhhhh, whew, that felt good.

Cameras ALL have enough megapixels now, they have for several years and any camer you buy will have enough resolution to make photos 8×10″, 11×17″ and if you want bigger, Genuine Fractals is only a few dollars purchase away. With GF you can get (from a nice file) any size image you need.

So relax with the pixel questions… I’m sure folks are just trying to be interested and that’s the thing they know to ask (or show they are hip to digital photo lingo ;-)

What should we ask?
Ask me if they camera has any cool features, or what my favorite cameras are now, or how to improve shots you are having trouble with, or ANYTHING but about the specs of my camera.

I’m bored stiff about MP and it shows the marketing twonks who sell cameras have people focused on buying more than they need and avoiding the real needs like good menu systems, bright lenses, flash that looks good, etc.

(end of rant)

Digital Shoot Cheat: Take Camera Notes

Quick silly tip…to keep organized:

If you are doing tons of photo locations (Like many different buildings, or as above, different classrooms) you can easily keep visual track of where you were and easily spot the transitions from one location to another by taking a photo-note like this.

It all started when I was taught that in sports if you shoot photos of the scoreboard periodically, you could keep your film (f’- ill- mmm’: The plasticy stuff that preceded digital capture) in order. From there, I’ve branched out to taking a quick photo of a school’s name before going in and then taking a photo of those standard xeroxed ‘Seminar Session 123: The Health Benefits of Coffee’ signs that are always outside of rooms at large conference events.

The photo above was to used to track which class I was in for a courseguide in the Rush-Henrietta Schools.

You could even shoot the subject’s name or a note about a photo someone wants for you. I’m always losing scraps of paper from shoots, but I never lose a photo, and it’s a great reminder right there with your event images!

It also is the perfect visual key for your clients who might have to edit your photos.

So the next time you have to shoot lots of similar looking things, do yourself a favor and take a quick photo note so you know where you were.

Happy low-stress shooting!

FIRST Rochester Robotics Competition

I’m just editing photos from the awesome robot competition…That was a cool challenge you had to do! I’ve posted a few quick favorites HERE, and I’ll be putting more up as time goes on.

I’ll also have a post soon about a sponsorship of a cool photo area with a free download collage and slide shows… thanks to the Finney Falcons for underwriting that, and for Xerox/FIRST for having me do the event again this year. I really love it. And RIT is an awesome host for the event. Congratulations to all of the teams!
