Apple Opens the Aperture

Ok, maybe I’m just trying to escape the editing I’m supposed to be doing for the Flander’s Group (that’s their portrait session on the screen)… But I was so jazzed by how Aperture lets me edit that I wanted to write about it.
With my dual screen setup, I can devote one screen to the organization stuff and the other is then free for seeing images… what a great way to work.

I can open up a series of big thumbnails (10 is a good number) and rate them. If I need to see some detail, hitting the tilde key (~) opens the lupe, which works just like a real photo, glass lupe used to (not zooming the whole image like Adobe’s Lightroom beta does.)
Going through a series big is easy too. I just select a thumbnail on the left screen and then scroll through the series using the arrow keys.

Being Kids

Kid-RCSD
I just had a great experience where I was able to turn 30 minutes of downtime at a shoot into some special.
The kids had been learning about digital photography (kudos to the Hillel School and the Rochester City Schools for this after school program) and so, since the kids asked politely and seemed really interested, I let them play a bit with the D200.

    Yup, he’s actually •touching• my bag…wow!

These kids were great and they really connected with the idea of how a series of stills played back rapidly becomes animation (I reffed the ‘Wallace & Grommet’ movie and they shot bursts of images that we played back on the LCD.)

We rapidly moved on to ‘Bunny Ears’ and ‘Goofy Faces’ as the art du jour.
Sometimes I stress when shoots are running behind. I’m glad this time I just let these kids be kids, and maybe they saw a bit of how fun shooting can be.

Behind the Scenes

I just had a great time shooting a ‘behind the scenes’ series for Geva Theatre’s production of ‘Five Guys Named Moe’.
It was fun to see it back because the first time around, the shows success was a huge boost for the Theatre (and my shooting career, since it was the first season I shot for *any* theatre! )

When I shot the show the first time, Colin was just over a year old. This time Colin and Lydia will go to see Moe with us and Oliver is just over a year old.
Being on stage as they rehearsed ‘Saturday Night Fish Fry’ and seeing the personal interactions of the cast, crew and creatives was a blast. I love Geva.
